Indian Power Projection. New Homegrown Aircraft Carrier

By 2014, India the second most populous nation on Earth will evolve into a Naval Power with serious power projection.

Very few countries have had the technical capability to produce homegrown warships on a scale such as an Aircraft Carrier but now it seems that India will be joining that elite Club.

As of 2009, Great Britain, France, Unites States, Russia, Spain and Italy have indigenous Aircraft Carriers as part of their blue-water fleets. Other nations such as Thailand, Brazil and India have Aircraft carriers which have been purchased from other nations.

India's only Aircraft carrier in current service is the Centaur class ship INS Viraat
(ex- HMS Hermes - pictured above) which is likely to be replaced around 2014 by the new 37,500 tonne Indigenous Vikrant class Carrier being built by Chochin Shipyard.

In addition to the INS Viraat (Purchased from the UK) India has also purchased another foreign carrier warship, the modified Kiev class carrier Admiral Gorshkov (pictured-left) to be renamed INS Vikramaditya. This vessel is being purchased from Russia for free, but India has contracted the Russians to renovate it and supply embarked air power, training, weapons and the removal of the ships P-500 Bazalt Nuclear missile launchers on the foredeck for an additional $1.5 Billion US Dollars. there have been reports that this price has been inflated greatly due to the ageing condition of the ship.

India's indigenous Vikrant class carrier will initially embark up to 30 MIG-29 Fighter jets of Russian origin and India is also developing a naval version of the HAL Tejas Fighter Plane (Pictured) for ultimate use on the carrier making the entire package indigenous to India.

Overall, it seems that in approx 5-6 years time, India will see its first Indian designed and built Aircraft carrier with an indigenous combat wing.

This new Naval hardware will undoubtedly bring India to the top of Asian nations who wish to project power outside of their own borders. I suspect that Pakistan will, in the spirit of rivalry no doubt pursue a similar course of naval upgrades although personally I do not think they are at the level of indigenous production as yet. But in time, I am sure they will.

Nuclear India YES Nuclear Iran NO

BBC News >>> The US Senate has approved a nuclear deal with India, ending a three-decade ban on US nuclear trade with Delhi.

The 86-13 vote was the last legislative hurdle in a process that began when an agreement was reached in 2005.

The deal will give India access to US civilian nuclear technology and fuel in return for inspections of its civilian, but not military, nuclear facilities.

India says the accord is vital to meet its rising energy needs. Critics say it creates a dangerous precedent.

They say it effectively allows India to expand its nuclear power industry without requiring it to sign the Non-Proliferation Treaty (NPT) as other nations must.

The US restricted nuclear co-operation with India after it tested a nuclear weapon in 1974.

Should Iran have Nuclear Power ?

In my humble opinion I say, yes. However, its all a question of trust isn't it.

There are five recognised countries in the world which are considered "nuclear weapons states" these are the United States of America, United Kingdom, France, Russian Federation and China.

A further 3 countries have declared their nuclear weapons capability, these are Pakistan, India and North Korea.

There are 3 more countries however and these are the ones which bring the nuclear issue to the Middle East.

Firstly Israel.
They have never officially confirmed or denied it, but it appears to be almost certain that they do possess Nuclear Weapons, given their defence expenditure and the fact that they are surrounded by countries who basically "hate" them.

Next, Syria.
Israel launched a surgical bombing mission into Syria on 6th September 2007 stating that it had destroyed a building which it believed had been a Nuclear Facility under construction. I would think it credible that Syria would indeed wish to pursue nuclear technology to balance the concerns against Israel.

Lastly, Iran. Now this would appear to be the big one. In theory there should be no reason why a country such as Iran should not have the ability to create peaceful Nuclear Power stations, but the west has a concern.

I think this is the reason.

In the Middle East, since the creation of Israel and the subsequent wars there has always been a guarantee that Israel could ultimately launch a Nuclear Warhead at any aggressor should it need it as a last resort. A country such as Syria, Iran, Egypt or anyone else who has an issue with Israel would know this, and therefore it would naturally limit their desire to wipe a Nuclear Israel out.

Lets say that Iran got Nuclear Power tomorrow, but there was a suspicion that they might have Nuclear Weapons capability too, this suspicion alone would create a differing type of relationship between the West and Iran. The West would suddenly come crawling to a Nuclear Iran, begging to be the best of friends.

Why?

Simply, lets say a country has 300 warships 1000 warplanes and 25,000 Battle tanks and it threatens a nation with only 100 warships 300 warplanes and 10,000 battle tanks, then normally the country with the most hardware would likely win in any conventional military exchange.

With Nuclear Weapons however, the numerical hardware and manpower advantage can be effectively neutralised.

For example, even if Israel had 10,000 nuclear warheads at 4.0 megatonnes each and Iran only had a measly 2 at approx 1.0 megatonnes each. Then Israel would still never take the chance of allowing Iran to deploy such nuclear power, even if Israel has a huge numerical advantage in conventional weapons.

The devastating effect of even a single "small" nuclear weapon is enough to not only destroy many lives but also wreck economies and maybe even spark a new world conflict.

This is why it is a matter of trust.

Can we trust a Nuclear Iran?
